A rhesus monkey named Albert was the first monkey astronaut, who on June 11, 1948 rode in a V2 rocket for over 39 miles. He died of suffocation during the flight.

After this flight a whole series of monkeys were launched in V2 Rockets and each died in violent and undesirable ways. Each monkey was named Albert.

Albert II became the first monkey to reach space alive (past the Kármán line) at 83miles up, but died upon returning to earth after a parachute failure on June 14, 1949.

Albert III died at 35,000 feet in an explosion of his V2 rocket in September 16, 1949.

Albert IV died on December 8th, 1949, by impact after another parachute failure after reaching over 100 miles altitude.

He was the last monkey used while testing V2 Rockets

Alberts I, II, and IV were rhesus monkeys while Albert III was a cynomolgus monkey.

On April 18, 1951, an Aerobee rocket was launched with a monkey payload, possibly named Albert V. He died due to parachute failure.

Yorick, also called Albert VI, along with 11 mouse crewmates, became the first animals to survive rocket flight on 20 September 1951; although, he died 2 hours after landing.
